Ryan Garcia’s B-sample revealed a prohibited drug positive.

A report received from the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory stating that boxer Ryan Garcia’s B-sample came back positive for the illegal substance ostarine.

The day before and the day of his unexpected triumph against Devin Haney last month, May 1, the A-sample, produced an adverse result for ostarine.

Ostarine is a potent signal for muscle development that is a protein-bound selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM). It helps athletes grow muscle mass, increase their rate of fat loss, and enhance their endurance and recuperation skills.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has banned ostarine since 2008. The group designated ostarine as an anabolic agent in 2022. Urine samples must be divided into A and B bottles in accordance with the organization’s requirements in order to avoid mistakes in the laboratory.

Before Ryan Garcia saw Oleksandr Usyk defeat Tyson Fury to win the heavyweight title on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, he told ESPN, “I don’t know where [the adverse finding] came from.” “To tell the truth, buddy, I don’t. I was taking normal s—, ashwagandha, omega-3, and D-3. What the f— [ostarine] is, I have no clue. Actually, I’m not sure. I’d be open and truthful with everyone.

“The main idea is that I would much prefer tell the truth than try to make it up by lying. Since lies are not true. So if I was taking it seriously, I would say, “Honestly, I was going through a weird situation,” I wasn’t quite confident in myself. I choose to acknowledge it. I’m sorry. That’s the only thing about it. But I didn’t, and I hate to lie. All I can say is, “Legal team, please help me sort this out.”

One of Ryan Garcia’s four attorneys, Darin Chavez, told ESPN at an official hearing before the New York State Athletic Commission that the intention is to “absolve Garcia of any wrongdoing.”

“Soon after being notified of his positive test, Ryan Garcia voluntarily had his hair collected and shipped to Dr. Pascal Kintz, the foremost expert in toxicology and hair-sample analysis,” Chavez said. “The results of Ryan’s hair sample were negative. It’s quite likely that one of the natural supplements Ryan was taking before to the fight was poisoned. We are now assessing the supplements in order to determine the exact source.”

The incident is still being investigated, the commission said in a statement on Thursday.

“The Commission strictly prohibits the use of performance enhancing drugs and works vigorously to uphold the integrity of the sport and maintain a level playing field,” said the statement. “Where violations are found, the Commission will take action.”

If Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) and his team can persuade the commission that there was supplement contamination, Garcia may be cleared. If not, he could have to pay fines and have his boxing license suspended.

Following three unanimous decision victories against Haney, Ryan Garcia launched a vicious attack on Victor Conte, Haney’s sports nutritionist and performance guru.

“This dude that’s f—ing defending Devin Haney is the biggest cheater in sports history,” Garcia said. “You can’t make this up.” Conte, the founder of Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO), was imprisoned for a conspiracy to sell performance-enhancing drugs prior to founding the sports nutrition company SNAC.

Ryan Garcia has been calling me a lot of horrible things lately, Conte said ESPN. However, the scientific approach was followed, and the findings of his two B-samples of urine revealed the presence of ostarine.

He is now liable to the stringent accountability rule, which might lead to a fine and a ban from boxing. Ryan Garcia’s conduct should serve as a cautionary tale to others about how not to act while the results of a drug test are still awaited. I think boxing should be acknowledged as a legitimate sport.”

Boxing has previously made use of osteotine. Lucian Bute tested positive for it in 2016, after their WBC super middleweight title match that resulted in a draw with Badou Jack. DQ pronounced Jack the winner. Amir Khan tested positive for ostarine after his sixth-round TKO loss against Kell Brook in 2022, and UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) suspended him for two years.

“It hasn’t been easy,” Garcia said. “I know I’ve been talking shit, but being by myself has been hurting me a little bit, making me feel depressed and like weeping. It seems like they’re taking away my biggest achievement, and I’m even feeling like sobbing right now.

Once again, however, give everything to God. Ultimately, I just feel like I strive to defend my innocence every single day, dude. I’ve been providing them with information on what they’re doing and how, the day before and the day after, it turned out to be beneficial.”

Garcia said, “I know I will find a way to fight,” in reference to a potential ban. “I will go to a foreign nation to fight if necessary. All I want is to get into the ring. I am at my best. I’m feeling well. I felt powerful.
