Bridgerton Recap: A Lost Cause

Bridgerton Recap: A Lost Cause

For the full-on romantic comedy bliss that we are receiving here, we would like to express our gratitude to Bridgerton, and more especially to Sarah L. Thompson, who created this episode.

Bridgerton should come as no surprise that Nicola Coughlan is doing an excellent job with the humor (although this is not surprising for our Derry Girl), and Luke Newtown is doing an excellent job with the art of the swoon. I just cannot wait till Colin and Pen are doing an excellent job with each other.

The fact that the anticipation is a part of the enjoyment is something that we are well aware of, having experienced earlier seasons.

Although we are only two episodes into the season, so far it has been really bringing it in terms of gradually driving our leads closer and closer to the moment that we all know they are going for, of letting us see the wheels turning in Colin’s brain as he slowly begins to view Penelope in a new light, and of letting us witness the moment that we all know they are headed for.

At this point in the narrative, Newton is particularly in a position to fulfill a demanding request.

Bridgerton

Even though the story line of Colin and Penelope on television is played out very differently than it is in the book version (the TV version has a lot more urgency, and having Colin mentor Penelope was such a smart move), we are still getting some iconic moments from the book that remain true to the heart of fan-favorite scenes, even though the details have changed.

These kinds of scenes appear twice in this episode. In Romancing Mister Bridgerton, there are two sequences that are narrated from Colin’s point of view, at least partly.

This provides some significant character interiority that just cannot be conveyed in the same manner on television. These two moments, the severed hand and the kiss, are very significant beats in the progression of Colin’s storyline and his revelation that maybe he has never taken the time to see Penelope for who she really is.

Bridgerton

It is evident that we are unable to read his rapid-fire thoughts about the unexpected sensations that are beginning to surface, and he is not prepared to discuss those feelings with anybody else; this is all face, baby. And Luke Newtown is able to bring it.

We have a complete understanding of his thoughts, and they are not exaggerated in any way. I was aware that Coughlan was destined to play this role, but Newton is also not to be underestimated. Can we get down to the nitty-gritty of everything that’s going on? All of you, let’s go for a stroll!

Colin Bridgerton‘s Charm School begins right away. No, really: Penelope asks Colin whether they should start with some charm-based reading material when they purposely meet paths while promenading (so Penelope).Bridgerton

Bridgerton

Colin responds, “Oh, no, they’re diving in head first” (so Colin). She’s going to flirt right now with a gathering of attractive bachelors since she has a fan and big eyelashes.

What a catastrophe, darlings, what a catastrophe. Here, Coughlan is quite humorous as he stumbles miserably. Penelope is certain that Colin will cancel off their second meeting. She claims she’s a lost cause. In Colin’s opinion, however, it is not at all accurate. Before delving further into these teachings, he just wanted to see what he had. He’s seen her charm before, so he knows it’s possible.

She was quite charming as she teased him on their first date, which happened to be the moment her yellow bonnet flew into his face and knocked him off his horse into a mud hole (we don’t get to witness it, but what a meet-cute). Bridgerton

Penelope has obviously accepted the fact that she must move on from her unfulfilled infatuation, but it’s still really nice that he remembers everything about it.

Bridgerton

You can also bet that she is relieved to hear this. Colin can still clearly recall their first encounter from years ago, and my guy is missing his usual trio to hang out with her? Come on, this man already has it rough, even if he may not be able to accept it yet.

He believes that Penelope’s over-anxiety about other people’s opinions is her issue. That’s incredibly generous coming from a guy who can behave and do whatever he pleases with almost no repercussions. Col, Pen will definitely work on that.

He has an idea: in order to get Penelope out of her brain, he wants her to practice flirting in a setting where she feels at ease. It’s the drawing room at Bridgerton House, by the way.

Bridgerton

Bridgerton

When Penelope’s practice flirtation with Colin became much too genuine early in the promotion for the next season on Netflix was aired, I knew we didn’t need to worry about anything with this season. Even when they are silent, and particularly when they are without uttering a word, these two exude chemistry. And now this scenario truly gets you in the context.

They hear Eloise arriving home early from the Modiste before they had a chance to feel too ashamed of themselves. Colin has Penelope hide in the study until the situation is resolved. He may not know why Pen and his sister fell out, but he doesn’t want to disturb them either .

Bridgerton

Since Penelope is a human, she immediately reads Colin’s trip notebook after finding it there. It has a sensuous quality. This young person could write romantic books in the future! Number Three, tell me more about starlight on skin.

Tell me about your depressing thoughts as a boy about being both close and far away. Penelope is breathless and agitated by the time Colin enters, horrified that she would read his letters.

There is some commotion as the two quarrel over the invasion of privacy, and Colin ends up cutting his palm on some glass from a candle holder.

Bridgerton

Has Colin ever been more exposed to Penelope as he is right now? He knows she has read his very private writing since she is bending down to caress his hand as they are looking at each other.

He’s shocked when she tells him how delicious it is, hardly making eye contact. As I said before, this season is for the authors, thus nothing makes an aspiring writer hotter or more agitated than receiving praise for their work.

His look shows that he is seeing Penelope for the first time. He’s becoming aware of stuff he was previously unaware of. Bridgerton

When these two realize they are about to have to be honest with one other, they break their little spell like the wonderful rom-com characters they are. Penelope has left! Naturally, she encounters Eloise by chance as soon as she leaves the home.

Later on, when Colin and Eloise are traveling in the same carriage to the ball that evening, this becomes a source of friction. Colin is still trying to piece together why these two are no longer friends, and he becomes particularly perplexed when Eloise says she doesn’t want to talk to her but still asks how she’s doing.

Colin assures her that Pen is doing well and that he is assisting her in finding a spouse this season. You’re correct; it’s clearly a portent of things to come when Eloise informs him of the potential harm that may occur to the two of them if that information leaked! Bridgerton

It’s unfortunate since the evening is going so well up until that moment. And I mean it in terms of Penelope’s flirtatiousness as well as the growing intimacy between Colin and Pen.

It is really beautiful to see when they are simply themselves and don’t strive to be charming around one other. However, when Eloise lies to another woman nearby about Colin aiding Pen with Cressida, things go south. Bridgerton

Besides, rumors are supposed to be disseminated, right? Later, when Eloise confronts Cressida for disclosing her secrets, Cressida has to correct Eloise and… It’s amazing how much I find myself rooting for Cressida Cowper right now. An unexpected turn of events!

Anyway, these folks have zero chill; back at the ball, everyone is pointing at Penelope and talking about her. As one example, one of the mamas (!!) responds that they’re merely wondering “why an eligible gentleman such as [him] would help a spinster find a husband” when Colin wants to know what they’re talking about. Like, woman, go jump in the Thames!

We then receive our second ball, which concludes with Colin attempting to chase after Penelope as she walks away in tears.

Being a smartass, Penelope understands that Whistledown must write about this to avoid giving anything away, but she is quite harsh with herself. describing Penelope Featherington’s lack of possibilities and hopelessness in her writing. Bridgerton

Once the rumor sheet is made public, we have an intriguing scene with Penelope and Portia. Portia is furious that her daughter would be such an idiot and that she is “being unreasonable about what [she] can achieve” in terms of her marital status.

Although these are typical remarks between a mother and her daughter, there is an intriguing exchange that occurs just before Portia departs.

Her expression appears to indicate that she is aware of her daughter’s pain and wants to help her, but she is unsure of how. I hope that Penelope’s emphasis this season will highlight Portia’s complexity and interest as well as their relationship.

What a stark contrast to the mother-child dynamics occurring in the Bridgerton residence.

In related news, Violet is still attempting to choose the best course of action with Francesca this season. She worries to Lady Danbury that Francesca would very easily accept the first suitable relationship that happens.

She is completely correct without even realizing it. In an exchange between Eloise and Francesca that we hear, Fran tells her sister that, in the end, what she really wants is to be married and move on from the turmoil of the marriage mart—and, if she’s being really honest, Bridgerton House—by getting the entire thing over with. Bridgerton

Lady Danbury suggests that her friend let Francesca to be who she is and see the outcome. Although Lady Danbury is unemployed technically, let’s be honest: She works as a wedding planner for a lot of gorgeous people, and she is darn amazing at it.

Lady D takes Francesca to a quiet room with a piano and allows her time to play; it’s her happy spot, and an attempt to let her be herself. She’s asking the Queen to come look at a picture in the same room, but she’s still open to choosing a diamond of the season, provided the candidate is deserving of the title and won’t make her look bad in Whistledown.

When Queen Charlotte discovers Francesca playing the piano, she is awestruck by her abilities, not simply her talent. What makes an impact is more that Fran is clearly playing because she likes to play rather than as an act to gain the Queen’s favor.

There and then, she almost declares her the diamond. We’ll see what kinds of opportunities those bring Francesca, and whether or not she is willing to consider them.

But just now, we have more important things to take care of! In the face of such shame once again, Colin determines he had to go check on Penelope. This time, however, he bribes her lady’s maid to allow them some solitude when he arrives at her garden gate late at night.

Colin would look at these decisions and say, “Dude, sir, you have it so bad for this woman and you don’t even know it,” if he had a true buddy.

Colin will soon come to his own realization that everything is OK.

She is not feeling well when he finds her at the gate. “Sad, stupid girl who thought she might have a chance at love,” is how she describes herself. Hearing her speak about herself in this manner bothers Colin. However, as she said in Whistledown, she is hopeless.

She chooses to ask Colin to kiss her since she doesn’t think it will ever happen for her. She assures him it won’t mean anything, but she doesn’t want to die without experiencing the sensation of a kiss since she knows she won’t likely get one.

Could we just speak about this right now? Newton and Coughlan are excellent. Penelope is incredibly in need of this—not in a pitying sense, but in a way that begs for it. Colin only wants to figure out how to support her and cheer her up.

He wants to offer her whatever she wants, and she wants this. They then share a kiss. It’s supple. It’s sentimental. As a spectator, I find it to be rather rewarding!

Penelope thanks you and leaves, keeping her promise that this would not mean anything. But all she said was that it would mean nothing to her. Colin’s expression as he attempts to comprehend what transpired? That expression indicates that it was meaningful to him.

Penelope has been a lost cause for a while now, but I’ll tell you who isn’t: this guy who keeps trying to persuade us he isn’t really in love with his best friend. Colin Bridgerton, we’re seeing you. We see your first glimpse of her.
