Baltimore Bridge Collapse: Rescue Efforts Underway After Ship Collision
March 26, 2024
Baltimore, Maryland – A significant portion of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore crumbled early Tuesday morning after a large cargo ship struck it. The incident caused several vehicles to fall into the Patapsco River below. Emergency crews are searching for at least seven people presumed missing, with one individual rescued in critical condition.
Investigators are still determining the cause of the collision. The ship, identified as the “Dali” and registered in Singapore, was reportedly departing Baltimore when it hit a bridge support. Disturbing footage circulating online shows the bridge section collapsing as cars plunge into the water.
“This unfolding situation appears to be a mass casualty event,” said Kevin Cartwright, Baltimore Fire Department communications director, at a press briefing today. “Our primary focus is locating and rescuing anyone potentially in the water.”
The search and rescue mission faces challenges due to river debris and strong currents. Multiple agencies, including the Coast Guard, fire department, and police, are working together in the effort. The extent of bridge damage is unknown, but officials have confirmed an indefinite closure.
Authorities haven’t released the identities of the missing individuals. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the cause of the ship collision.
In a statement, Grace Ocean Pte Ltd, the Dali’s owner, and Synergy Marine Group, the manager, expressed condolences to those impacted by the accident and confirmed the safety of all 22 Indian crew members on board.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
