A tornado struck a mobile home park in Pavilion Township on Tuesday, injuring at least a dozen people, according to a county official. According to Taylor Koopman, a representative for the Kalamazoo County Administrator’s Office, over 50 individuals were trapped in the building owing to fallen wires, and work to remove the lines was still happening as of 9:30 p.m. ET. However, city of Portage spokesman Mary Beth Block informed CNN via email that the structure had been approved by officials.
According to the National Weather Service, at least one tornado, perhaps two, struck the Portage region on Tuesday, after the area had two tornado warnings in less than an hour.
“We have significant damage, including damage to residential and commercial buildings, trees down across many roads in the city, and several reports of gas leaks,” Portage city officials said in a press statement.
The city urged its inhabitants to “stay at home” and “please stay off the roads.” “First responders are stuck in gridlock.”
A potential tornado struck Centreville on Tuesday, destroying many structures, both residential and commercial, according to St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman. The storm took off roofs and crushed houses “completely down,” Bingaman told CNN.
According to Emergency Management Director Tim Miner, at least seven houses in Branch County, roughly 60 miles south of Kalamazoo, were destroyed, and he was unable to evaluate damage in other portions of the county.
