Millions of people are unable to get in touch with their local authorities as a result of major 911 disruptions in four states.
There were reports of huge 911 disruptions that occurred late Wednesday night, leaving millions of people unable to contact police. As a result, law enforcement agencies in four different states were left in a state of disarray.
By late evening, a significant number of the power outages that had been reported in the states of Nebraska, Nevada, South Dakota, and Texas had been restored.
According to statements made by law enforcement officials to NBC News on Thursday, there is therefore no evidence to suggest that the power disruptions were caused by a cyberattack or any other criminal act.
Lumen Technologies appears to be the cause of the disruptions, according to a spokeswoman for the communications and telecom business, even if the Federal Communications Commission is still conducting an investigation into the matter.
Some customers in Nevada, South Dakota, and Nebraska “experienced an outage” on Wednesday as a result of a third-party company that was not affiliated with Lumen “physically cutting our fiber” while “installing a light pole,” according to Mark Molzen, a spokesperson for the company.
“We restored all services in approximately two and a half hours,” according to the official. According to Molzen, Lumen does not offer its 911 services in the state of Texas.
“Our techs identified the issue and worked hard to fix it as quickly as possible,” according to his statement. “We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding.”
